Shakespeare Garden at Bethel Public Library

Located at 189 Greenwood Avenue

In 1995, as part of a larger Library Beautification Project, the original Shakespeare Garden was established in a raised bed at the Library entrance. The garden featured plants referenced in Shakespeare’s writings. Extensive renovations to the Library in 2005 required that the garden be removed and a new one created. In addition to the plantings,  an urn (c.1881) which was previously part of the famous P. T. Barnum Fountain was placed in the center of the garden. A reading bench donated by the Friends of the Bethel Public Library was added as well. Other generous private donations were made and are greatly appreciated. A detailed book describing the garden, plant material, related folklore, and Shakespearean quotes is housed in the Library.
